Marley Dias

Marley is the fifth-grader behind the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign, started out of frustration when,as an avid reader, found that none of her assigned books from school featured characters that looked like her. She vented to her mother, who had probably the best response any parent can have to a venting child, “well, what are you going to do about it?” Since her incredibly successful campaign went viral (she has ammassed over 7,000 books and “worked (her) butt off to create this space where black girls’ stories are read and celebrated in schools and libraries”), Marley has continued to use her wonderful personality and drive to create Marley Mag, a zine on which she has used as a platform to “elevate the voices of all those who have been ignored and left out” #WCW
